With Fallen Angels I made an infrequent visit to the world of Science Fiction, and a rather unusual one at that.

The novel, set in a dystopian near-future in which a strong green push to prevent global warming has, ironically, resulted in an ice age, largely focuses on an underground sci-fi culture in a society that has rejected science. It is thus an oddly self-referential novel, being a sci-fi novel written about and for fans.

Nevertheless (or perhaps additionally), this book presents an interesting glimpse into a potential future, and given that it was written almost 2 decades ago, a far too portentous one. It reminded me, once again, of the risks inherent in a blind, fundamental devotion to any cause, even one as seemingly straightforward as environmentalism.
