This is one of those books where the title and the cover were very successful at doing their job of grabbing my attention – and the book itself went on to really deliver on what they promised.

I bought The Society of Unknowable Objects on a whim as a holiday read, and it's a thoroughly entertaining spy-thriller-meets-fantasy-romp that nevertheless has real characters and raises some unexpectedly deep and dark philosophical questions.

From the very beginning it hooked me with an unsolved mystery, and as the plot unfolded the author revealed details just fast enough that I could stay one step ahead of the characters. In other words, the puzzles were perfectly constructed to let me have the satisfaction of piecing things together just before the reveal.

What is it actually about, you ask? Well, the title sums it up well: there are secret magic objects with extraordinary powers, and a group that's trying to find, contain and protect these artefacts. Of course there are other forces attempting to utilize them for more nefarious ends, and the resulting conflict provides all the drama one expects.

The writing itself is approachable without feeling thin, and some of the more fantastical scenes have a delightful, almost horror-like quality to them. Overall it's a genuinely imaginative and very entertaining read, and I definitely recommend it for your next weeknight read.
